The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks

Contemporary Mystery, Cozy, Amateur Sleuth

His romantic weekend in ruins, shy twenty-something artist Perry Foster learns that things can always get worse when he returns home from San Francisco to find a dead body in his bathtub. A dead body in a very ugly sportscoat -- and matching socks. The dead man is a stranger to Perry, but that's not much of a comfort; how did a strange dead man get in a locked flat at the isolated Alton Estate in the wilds of the "Northeast Kingdom" of Vermont? Perry turns to help from "tall, dark and hostile" former navy SEAL Nick Reno -- but is Reno all that he seems?

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

I absolutely loved The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks.  Josh Lanyon has such a knack for creating flawed yet fascinating characters, and Perry and Nick are great examples.  Perry seems so fragile at the beginning, yet he has a core of stubbornness and strength that keeps him going no matter how tough things get.  Nick starts out surly, cold, and even mean at times, but he too has hidden depths.  As they attempt to find out who killed the man in Perry’s tub—and where the body went—they learn a lot about the odd inhabitants of the apartment building, and about each other.  The interaction between Perry and Nick kept me on the edge of my seat just as much as the mystery did, and the ending is even more satisfying because of that.  The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks has everything you could ask for in a romantic suspense story:  mystery, action, romance, and emotion.  In my opinion, The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks is required reading for anyone who likes a good mystery with a satisfying romance.

I loved Josh Lanyon’s The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks. The characters are great. The lead characters are perfectly matched for each other, complementing each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Moreover, while the secondary characters read like a list from some pulp fiction book, the mystery grabs you. I spent the whole time thinking I knew ‘who done it’ only to change my mind a few minutes later. Of course, since I picked every character at least once I turned out to be right. This is a must read for any mystery lover.
Literary Nymphs Reviews
The plot is excellent with several strands woven into the action. The myth and past tragedies are excellent and very intriguing. With the creation of a whole cast of unusual boarders, you are never sure who is responsible until the very end. A delightful mix of humor, suspense and romance, The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks will bring Josh Lanyon more fans while satisfying his old ones.

All in all, this was an absorbing read - as you can tell by my mammoth reading session. The book clipped along at a great pace and I was hooked from start to finish. I'm giving it a grade of 'excellent'

This book proves once again what a master craftsman this author is in character and plot development. None of the characters was "over the top" although each one was quite distinctive; the flow of the story was beautifully done as the tension mounted and the personalities morphed before my eyes when the stress became too much for their fragile psyches. Reading a murder mystery is always a journey for me rather than a destination and The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks provided a wonderfully crafted map to the final goal of solving the crime. I think readers will find that the best part of this book is not the satisfaction of unraveling the clues and identifying the perpetrator (if you do get there) but the wonderful prose of this skillful and talented author who has given me hours of enjoyment as I journey through his world... definitely a 'keeper" and I highly recommend it, even if you're not a fan of murder mysteries.
Reviews by Jessewave
... another winning novel by Josh Lanyon, who has the knack for writing a good mystery. Missing jewels, secret passageways, and people with secrets all come together in an irresistibly suspenseful package, and once you start this story, it is nearly impossible to put it down. It starts with a bang and keeps the suspense flowing until the very end. There are no loose ends left dangling. Everything is tied up neatly at the conclusion and no questions are left unanswered.
Fallen Angel Reviews (Recommended Read)
The well-written plot moves along at a steady pace. The mystery is a good one with almost everyone becoming a suspect at one point or another. The clues are mostly there and the ending is very satisfying. Perhaps, this story is most easily equated to an old classic thirties or forties mystery movie ~ fun, mysterious, and thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend!
Rainbow Reviews
I don't think it's giving anything away to reveal that this is not a ghost story at all, but a mystery -- so much an old-fashioned, classic mystery that it sometimes borders on parody. It has all the elements: a collection of eccentric suspects, each with his or her own particular motive; an amateur sleuth and his reluctant sidekick; even an impromptu seance. The story itself, however, is fresh, often funny, full of twists and moments of suspense. There's also an enjoyable romantic sub-plot between the two unofficial sleuths. I can recommend this as fun and interesting throughout.
